Chat Room Tutorial
One of the greatest social networking tools offered by Etsy is the chat rooms. On any given day they are a handful of chatrooms filled people who love to talk. Some of the rooms are for trading, others for games, and often you can find rooms dedicated to helping newbies.
![]() Chat room layout Chat Box: This is where you see everyone chatting. There is no way to scroll back, so when the rooms get full chat can move quite fast. Message Box: This is where you type your messages. Some, but not all, html codes are allowed. I will have more on this further down. Shapes: Shapes are shapes that appear when you click with your mouse anywhere in the message box. The number listed is the amount of shapes you have, and you get more shapes the longer you are in the room. To change the shape you type /shape name Here are some shape examples: ![]() Color Bar: This is where you can change the color of your name by clicking a square. If you don't see a color you like, you can always use an html hex code. An html hex code is a 6 digit code comprised of numbers and letters. You can google "Html color chart" to see a list of them. Here is the code you should type in the chat bar, this will turn your name a bright red: /hex #CC0033 Avatars: The avatars are the people who are all in the chatrooms. They are in order by who has been registered on Etsy the longest, going from Left to Right, then Top to Bottom. If you hover over an avatar you will see the people's name, and a link to their shop & profile. When an avatar is dimmed, that means the person has been afk for 5 minutes. When someone is afk for 15 minutes the chatroom will automatically kick them out. Room Title: This is the tag line at the top of the chat. It can be changed by anyone. To change the title all you have to do is type /title new_title. Listing Cards: You will see listing cards and a listing box on the right side of your screen. In the box you can put either a URL or an item number and that item will pop up on the screen. The person who put up the listing card will have their avatar show up in the top left corner. It is polite to thank a person who has linked one of your items, and you should return the favor. You can link your own items, but self promoting is considered poor taste if your not in one of the self-promoting rooms. HTML Commands As I mentioned above, you can use HTML in the chat box. You have to type the html code in every time you type a message, so it's handy to keep it in your clipboard or if you use a lot of different html codes, to keep a notepad open. To change your font color: Message - You change out the hex code to change out the colors. You can use multiple font colors in a single message so that your words are all different colors, for example this: $1Shipping for US Customers! Buy more than one, and I'll refund all shipping! Becomes this: $1Shipping for US Customers! Buy more than one, and I'll refund all shipping! To change your font size: You just replace the number with the size of the font you want. Bold, Italic, Underline: is Bold, is Italic, is Underline Getting around the word filter: Can be done, not going to tell you ;) Tips & Tricks To send a private message you type /msg name message for example: /msg rathina hello! You don't have to type a person's name out all the way. You can just type the first few letters, and then hit tab or right arrow and it will fill it it If you want to visit a person's shop, you can type /shop name and their shop will open in a new window. If you hear a "Boink" noise it means someone said your name (your name will be auto bolded when ever it's used). There is a different sound for when you receive a whisper. When you are looking at the list of chat rooms, the avatars are listed in order of who has been in the room the longest from left to right. Useful for knowing how long someone's been sitting in a "Featured Seller Game Room" Types of Rooms Anyone can open a room, and these are a few of the rooms you might find when you check out the chatrooms: Featured Seller Game Rooms: This is a game, where one person's items are linked for 5 minutes. If someone buys, they become the next "Featured Seller", if no one buys the current "featured seller" picks the next featured seller. Unless someone is keeping time, usually the previous featured seller times for the next. Self-Promoting: Exactly what it says, promote your self, your sales, your items, etc. Trade: Usually for trading. Chatting: For chatting Critiquing: For Critiques. ---- Disclaimer: Easy Etsy is not affiliated or owned by Etsy.com.
