Photo/Graphics
Everything I can find about Photography, or Graphic design will be dumped into this tag. I may or may not break it off in to two different tabs, depending on how full this page gets. While you don't always need expensive software, it does make things easier, but here is some helpful links if you don't have any.
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ - Resize your pictures without software
http://www.makeathumbnail.com - Make thumbnails of your pictures without software
http://www.gimp.org/ - GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
I personally like to use Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator. They make great programs. Sometimes people ask which program do I really need? I always say this: Photoshop is for photo manipulation. If you already have a photo, and want to add or change something on it, get Photoshop. If you want to start from scratch, mostly for graphic work, get Illustrator.
The cheapest way to get Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator if you are a student. Either in high school or college, just bring your school ID to any college bookstore and they should be able to sell you the programs at the student rate. I paid $200 each for CS3 Photoshop & Illustrator about 5 years ago. The student edition is the same as the regular full priced edition.
